Harris | Franschhoek, Western Cape

There is something magical about a loft that overlooks a seemingly endless vista of mountains and forests. Our residential project that is nestled at the foothills of the Mont. Rochelle reserve does just that! The double-storey residence occupies one of the last-available stands within a quaint Franschhoek boutique estate, and follows the gentle style guide typical of small-town charm. The loft bedrooms face North-East, allowing for generous morning light to stream in, often also sparkling off the reservoir in the adjacent neighbouring property. There is an intimacy in having all of the upstairs space dedicated to bedrooms. The scent of pine wafts in from the open expansive windows.

Downstairs, the open-plan layout allows for effortless movement throughout the space. The double-doors open out to a wooden pergola which offers enough shade without interrupting the Mountain views above. Wooden slats for the pergola were an intentional choice. We make an effort towards natural design choices, like the use of organic materials, in order to continue architecture’s connection to nature. The use of wood continues the aesthetic of the surrounding oak, pine and olive trees, while still allowing a movement of light. This home was designed for a local developer as a family rental for the vacation market in the bustling town of Franschhoek. The home will host happy families over Bastille weekend, Eater holidays, the renowned Literary festival or just for a stint for those yearning for a home away from home.
