van Bommel | Suiderstrand

(Western Cape Province, SA)

Part of the design brief for the von Bommel home in Suiderstrand was to contend with the duality of living on the ragged Southern-most coastline of Africa: maximising access to the sprawling views of the frothing Atlantic ocean while taking care to shield the house from the fierce gale-force South-Easterly wind that buffets the house during the Autumn months. The stacking South-facing folding doors protect the open-plan living and dining space while maintaining uninterrupted views of the Agulhas National Park.

The house is a sensory dream: fynbos and a salty sea breeze stream in through strategic stacking doors, windows, and clear storey- windows across the house. The bedrooms are upstairs. The en-suite main bedroom sits across from the secondary bedrooms that share their own en-suite – perfect for family living! On rainy days, the family can watch movies and play games in the comfort of the pajama lounge, which also has sea views and a braai-area balcony. The parking makes provision for sheltered access, away from the elements, directly into the scullery. All wet gear, after adventures on the local beach, can be stored in a ventilated space on the South-Western corner of the house.
