The Kenilworth home is an impressive 100-year-old structure in the heart of Cape Town’s Southern Suburbs. Unfortunately, the home offered a scattato and stilted flow, which did not permit logical or easy transition between rooms or needs. A challenge in renovating heritage homes is to manage the tension between satisfying the modern demands of a space while retaining the dignity and charm of the home’s original structure. To achieve an organic transition between spaces within the house that suits a fast-paced contemporary life, meant that a spine was inserted in the interior of the house. Bedrooms branched off more easily and were grouped together more logically. Similarly, the kitchen also required a modern translation, so it was opened up to allow for more light and more intelligent storage solutions.
