The discovery of a loft was the result of a happy accident. A fortunate chance encounter on the roof allowed the owner to discover an impossibly beautiful view of the famous grassy koppies of the South of Johannesburg and realise the potential of building vertically. By opening up the staircase, we accessed a cavernous double-volume space. With latticed wooden windows that filled the expanse of one wall, the room opened up to the sky and invited in streams of light into the new master suite. Many happy afternoons were spent watching the gathering summer afternoon thunderclouds from dizzying heights while protected in the luxurious comfort of reimagined space.
